Fickle fickle…

Dear readers,

If you notice some changes on my blog please don’t care too much about it. I’m in a fickle mode and have been itching to revamp my blog theme. As you can see, I’ve gone back to the old one. I love the temporary theme but I thought that it looked strange with 2 columns. I might use it again though. I don’t know. I’ll see. So if  you arrive on my blog one morning and it looks different, please don’t refresh your page. It’s still me.

PS: Do you prefer my blog this way? Or you wish to see something different? Please help me make up my fickle mind.

Yours truly,

Anna

Random Updates

Hello! So how have you been doing? Good I hope. I, for once, have chosen to wake up late on a bright Monday afternoon. I made a good choice indeed! Now I feel all fresh and prepped for yet another day of programming.

Oh yeah, now that I’ve mentioned it! I’ve delved into a bit of PHP, CSS, XHTML and Javascript here and there. And it was all for the sake of creating my own Wordpress theme which also explains my lack of post. The lowdown is, I am sick and tired of using themes that are not customizable enough. I have also figured that with all the time that I have, I might as well put it to a good use and pick up where I have left off back when I was in school.

My current progress has been tremendous, at least up to my standards. Here’s what I’ve achieved :

  • downloaded, installed and configured a local server on my laptop
  • downloaded, installed and configured Wordpress on the local server
  • successfully coded the ‘index.php’, ‘header.php’ & ’style.css’
  • created a dummy theme

I am currently putting a pause for the work on the dummy theme because I had some problems with my ’sidebar’ layout. Thus, I will have to read more on CSS positioning.

Knowing me, with so much projects in hand, if I do not get down to planning, I might never execute each of them properly. So here’s my plan :

  1. create the ‘dummy theme’ layout
  2. integrate Wordpress to the layout (coding)
  3. documentation
  4. create a ‘photo-of-the-day’ widget (can anyone guide me with this please…)

So there!

I love Wordpress

I couldn’t be more happier with Wordpress. From the downloading process to installation and configuration, it was easy-peazy. Any newbie could do it, especially me!

I started out with registering a domain name and renting a web server. Many web host provides both services at the same time. I have mine on LimeBox for the automatic web hosting; which simply means that as soon as you complete the payment process, you’ll instantly get your account (only works with PayPal / Credit Card payment method though). The whole transaction was a breeze and it only took me 10mins to get my account up and running.

My next step was integrating a blogging platform. I chose Movable Type without further research and it turned out a HUGE mess. The installation was lengthy, technical and there wasn’t a proper documentation. After numerous attempts, I’ve managed to pass the installation stage and finally got to the dashboard. There were some glitches and I had to spent another half a day trying to work it out. I had to give up.

Which eventually brought me to Wordpress.

The installation ran smooth (I used the automatic installation on Fantastico, very fast!) and the configurations were made for dummies. Now I can finally work on the design and contents for the website. I will find the time to include documentations on some processes. So check back soon!
